LG Gram 17 (2020) Review

LG Gram 17 display

Thin laptops? Lots! A laptop weighing less than 2kg? Lots! A laptop with an extra-large screen and thin bezels? Even more! But what about a thin and light laptop with a 17-inch screen size and thin bezels?

The LG Gram 17 is one of the breakthroughs in the laptop market here in 2020, which is quite a surprise for some of its competitors. The LG Gram 17 is a productivity laptop with a 17-inch screen which is certainly very comfortable for everyday use.

Interestingly, this size does not burden the weight and dimensions of the LG Gram 17. In fact, this laptop is one of the lightest laptops you can buy today.

Design

As we have explained, one of the advantages that you can enjoy with the LG Gram 17 is that it is a very light laptop, but has a large screen size (17 inches) and excellent performance.

In fact, this ultrabook is perhaps the lightest ultrabook with a 17-inch screen, weighing only 1.35 kg.

This weight is even equivalent to the 14-inch Dell Inspiron 14 7000 and the 13.3-inch Razer Blade Stealth. Definitely an advantage that LG should "sell" it. In general, 17-inch laptops are gaming laptops that are very large, bulky, with light decorations and rough lines here and there. Not to mention the average unit weight is just over 2 kg.

But of course LG has to pay dearly because LG has to use magnesium alloy material to reduce its weight significantly. This material is actually very strong and very durable.

However, when you touch this laptop, you feel a bit cheap. By using a magnesium alloy, the LG Gram loses the rigidity and strength that other Ultrabooks prefer.

With the LG Gram 17, you can even feel the loss of stiffness when you hold the screen left and right and then rotate it. The LG Gram 17 screen can be bent even if only a little.

However, the build quality of the LG Gram 17 deserves a thumbs up. But even that might not be a strange thing considering that the price of the previous series laptops alone could reach Rs 30 crore. Lastly, there's nothing out of the ordinary in the particular formats and colors on offer. The more neutral gray LG Gram 17 hasn't lost any sense of superiority and elegance, so it doesn't dare to be carried around.

Battery and performance

Equipped with Intel Core i7 1065G7 with 4 cores and 8 threads and GPU with Intel Iris Plus Graphics. This LG Gram 17 laptop is suitable for use as a daily productivity tool for office workers.

Of course, there are laptops that are much more powerful in terms of the ability to process photos, images and videos. But that doesn't mean LG Gram can't do it, although it's fine to edit your own photos. But for video editing, we really don't recommend this laptop. Especially for those of you who like to edit videos that are quite heavy.

Speaking of numbers, for example, the LG Gram 17 loses out to the XPS 13 2-in-1 Iris Plus and the Razer Blade Stealth GTX 1650. The 4K H.264 rendering took 6.5 minutes 61 minutes 47 seconds compared to 48 minutes 12 seconds (Dell XPS) and 19 minutes 7 seconds (Razer Blade Stealth).

Also, you can't play AAA-rated games on this laptop either, but this laptop wasn't designed for that. That said, this laptop can still win some fairly light games.

Various games such as Overwatch, Doom, Rainbow Six Siege can still be consumed on this laptop. However, it is only playable at the lowest settings and only manages 30-60 FPS.

But actually this laptop is not a gaming laptop in general, but a laptop specifically for productivity. Maybe the added value of this laptop lies in its "beautiful" shape which makes this laptop look very neat. So no complaints about that!

Another advantage of the LG Gram 17 in 2020 is its much better storage capacity compared to the previous year's LG Gram 17.

The LG Gram 17 currently uses a PCIe NVMe 2.0 SSD, which means it has very fast read and write speeds. In fact, in several other tests and reviews, this SSD achieved an average write and read speed of 3300MB/s.

Screen

The part that other reviewers have highlighted about the LG Gram 17 is that it looks quite unique. How not, instead of using 16 aspect ratio:

9, LG Gram 17 actually gets a 16 aspect ratio screen:

10, which makes it look quite wide. With a resolution of 2560 x 1600 pixels, the location of the LG Gram 17 is also very unique. Because that means the resolution of this laptop is higher than FHD (1920 x 1080) but still less than 4K (3840 x 2160).
